Health Care Ethicist, Full Time (Annapolis, Maryland)

Newly created in 2016, the ethics program enjoys robust support from administrative leadership. Drawing upon AAMC’s Magnet recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, it has developed a nurse-centric and proactive approach to early identification of ethical dilemmas in clinical care. As a result, there has been an exponential growth in the number of ethics consultations and AAMC is dedicated to building upon that success by expanding ethical capability and humanism in patient care throughout the health system.
Working under the supervision of the Chief of Ethics, the Health Care Ethicist provides bioethics expertise throughout the Anne Arundel Health System. This position works collaboratively with patients, families, and professional staff to address complexities and ethical dilemmas that surround patient care and patient experience.
Organize and participate in clinical ethics rounds on units throughout the medical center
Develop ethics resources and educational initiatives throughout the health system and broader AAMC community
Participate in review of hospital policies relating to ethics considerations
Maintains in-depth knowledge of the field of bioethics, social medicine, and community health including professional standards, concepts, and methods of ethics consultation, and prevailing trends in the professional literature
Tracks and reports on key metrics relating to the ethics program and conducts clinical ethics research
Demonstrates skill in cultural humility, cultural competence, and competency in empathy
Master’s degree in ethics or a related discipline
Minimum of three to five years in a healthcare setting providing clinical ethics consultation services, working with an ethics consultation team, and serving on ethics committees
Excellent teaching skills in formal and informal settings
